"Vivimos en mundos interpretativos"

Rafael Echeverría

Contemporary · Chilean philosophy · Ontology of language · Ontological coaching

Rafael Echeverría, a Chilean sociologist and philosopher, sets out the ontology of language in Ontología del lenguaje (1994) through a handful of principles. The first: we do not know how things are; we only know how we observe them or interpret them. We live in interpretive worlds. It is not relativism for its own sake. Echeverría draws on Nietzsche, Heidegger, Wittgenstein and speech-act theory, and on the biology of his compatriots Maturana and Varela (No. 42): everything said is said by an observer, and language does not only describe the world, it acts in it. The book became a root text of ontological coaching, developed by Echeverría with Julio Olalla and carried to Australia by Alan Sieler. Change the interpretation, and different action becomes possible. We print the Spanish; the English is our translation.
