"Attention is a moral act"

Iain McGilchrist

Contemporary · Philosophy · Neuropsychiatry · Attention

McGilchrist’s five-word claim from The Master and His Emissary (2009): attention is a moral act. It creates; it brings aspects of things into being; and in doing so it makes others recede. What we choose to notice is never neutral - it shapes the world we then have to live in. The book’s larger argument is about two styles of attention in the divided brain and in Western culture; this line is the ethical hinge. It pairs cleanly with No. 41, Simone Weil’s “Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity”: for Weil, attention is a gift to the other; for McGilchrist, it is also how reality itself is disclosed. Same nerve, two traditions.
