"Descartes is dead"
T4THNK, inspired by Nietzsche and Ken Wilber
Contemporary · Philosophy of mind · inspired by Nietzsche
René Descartes (1596–1650) founded modern philosophy with “I think, therefore I am” and pictured the mind as a non-physical thing steering the body. That picture has been under attack ever since. Gilbert Ryle mocked it as “the ghost in the machine”; Antonio Damasio’s Descartes’ Error argued that emotion and body are central to reason; embodied and extended theories locate thinking in bodies, tools and environments. The slogan is our twist on Nietzsche’s “God is dead” - less a celebration than a report that an old foundation no longer holds - with a nod to Ken Wilber, who called the Cartesian split between mind and world the major epistemological mess left by the Enlightenment. What replaces the isolated thinking self? Perhaps a mind that is embodied, social and always in the world.
I think, therefore… it’s complicated.
