"Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity"

Simone Weil

20th century · Philosophy · Mysticism · Ethics of attention

Weil makes attention itself a gift. To really see another person - without grabbing, without using them as a prop in your own drama - is already an act of generosity, and the rarest kind. The line comes from a letter to the poet Joë Bousquet (13 April 1942), not from Gravity and Grace; the French is “L’attention est la forme la plus rare et la plus pure de la générosité.” In a culture that monetises every glance, Weil’s claim still cuts: attention is not a soft extra. It is moral work. No. 44 (McGilchrist) presses the same nerve from another side: attention is a moral act because what we attend to, we help bring into being.

Look properly. That is already a gift.
