"Until philosophers are kings"
Plato
Classical Greek philosophy
In the Republic, Socrates claims that cities will have no rest from their troubles until philosophers become kings, or kings genuinely become philosophers. Plato believed rulers need wisdom - knowledge of the Good - rather than ambition, wealth or popularity. The idea is controversial: Karl Popper saw in it the seeds of authoritarianism. Yet the challenge still bites. Do we choose leaders for their judgement and integrity, or for their charisma? Cut short, the slogan leaves the sentence hanging - until philosophers are kings… - inviting you to finish the thought, and perhaps to govern your own life more philosophically.
The sentence is unfinished. So is the job.
