"Beware the barrenness of a busy life"
Socrates
Classical Greek philosophy
No ancient text records Socrates saying this, yet the line fits him. In Plato’s Apology he declares that the unexamined life is not worth living, and he spent his days questioning busy Athenians who were sure they knew what mattered. Busyness can feel like meaning while crowding it out: a full diary can sit beside an empty life. Seneca warned likewise that life is not short - we simply waste much of it. The quote invites a pause: are you productive, or merely occupied? For the Greeks, reflection and conversation were not luxuries but the soil in which a good life grows.
Busy is not the same as full.
