"The ‘I am’ is the way"

In the spirit of Nisargadatta Maharaj & Ramana Maharshi

Modern Indian non-dualism · Advaita Vedanta

In Advaita Vedanta the most immediate fact of experience is not any thought, feeling or role but the bare sense of being: “I am.” Teachers such as Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj urged seekers to rest attention on this pure sense of existence before it attaches to labels - “I am a teacher”, “I am anxious”, “I am this body”. Followed inward, they taught, the “I am” dissolves the false self and points to awareness itself. The line also playfully echoes the Gospel’s “I am the way”. Either way, the path does not lie out there; it begins with the simple fact that you are.

Before the label, there’s just: I am.
